The Monarch Collection is a collection of ceramic. Monarch butterflies are a symbol I associate with my grandfather. I was the last family member to see him before his death. During my time with him, I had a dream that we were in the car driving through the North Carolina mountains and a swarm of thousands of monarch butterflies flew above the car like a blanket; it felt so real. A few months later, my grandfather died in his house. I promised myself I would do something special for him. For his 10 year anniversary, I got a pair of monarch wings tattooed on my back to symbolize that I have earned my wings and that my grandfather is always with me. I see monarchs everywhere, all the time. Seeing them gives me hope that he is with me. This collection of work I have created consists of various ceramic vessels, such as mugs, and cups, decorated in patterns of monarch wings using glazes. As I have developed my artistic skill, I recognized that I want my art to be a greater part of the world in order to affect change.
