Nicole Porco
We were birthed from the very ground we stand on, Mother Earth. However, modern society has become increasingly disconnected from the earth. From the overexploitation of natural resources to humanity’s consumption of consumer goods, these actions have proven detrimental to the future of our planet. I hope to change our outlook of the world, from a place of separation to a place of connection. By calling attention to humanity’s relationship to the physicality of our planet and biodiversity, I pay tribute to water, soil, plants, and trees we often take for granted. Nature is astonishingly unique. I am drawn to the raw, organic matter of our natural world. My natural surroundings continuously inspire me, and I feel a deep sense of serenity when I am immersed in nature's forests and bodies of water. Every day, people primarily use their vision to perceive the world. However, in order to have a deeper sense of connection to the earth, one must engage with their other senses. Through my work, I engage viewers to their other senses, including sound, touch, smell, and taste. Through sculpture, photography, and video, I seek to re-engage the viewers to all of the planet’s life-sustaining elements from which they have become alienated. I strive to acknowledge all of the interconnected roles we share as an entire ecosystem, with an aim to appropriately convert our present materiality into effective, responsible stewardship.
