Emily Rowe
The imagination of a child is what I am returning to through my artwork. No dream is too big, too small, or too scary. Through metalsmithing and painting I create an atmosphere of fantasy as a narrative of my past. I depict nature through the viewpoint of my childhood self. Nature is intertwined with everything I create. I seek comfort by piecing together parts of myself through creating. Repetitive line work and assembly of multiples, send me into a meditative trance. My metal pieces are small in size with intricate details, every part fabricated with a careful eye. With my paintings I start with loose ideas and allow the piece to evolve much like ourselves. The nostalgic part of my process is always my favorite. My fascination with miniature objects stems from the toys I played with growing up and drives my creation. Reminiscing and keeping memories from fading away are my goals. Motion in my pieces help viewers understand concepts through the act of childhood play, pulling around little train carts by a chain, picking up little creatures, picking flowers, playing with grass, inspecting objects, ruffling through blankets and scribbling. Much like adults reminisce about the past through stories, I tell stories with my work. I have a deep personal connection with all of my art.
