My work explores the idea of self portraiture, and a form of abstraction through the medium of photography. I photograph myself or others with the use of lighting, and pieces of paper to form shapes that simulate the suffocation of being stuck in an abstract world where you have to stick to society's norms, and end up being distant from one's self when entering adulthood. There is communication through the light, shadow and form that emulates this system of robotic conformity. The paper represents childhood, and the innocence that we lose growing up, while the black and white forms communicate the structures that society imposes on us. As an artist I was always scared to go into a world where the lifestyle is nine to five like everyone else because I grew up with a challenging learning disability. In this pixelated world you have to stick to what society says to be considered accepted. Follow the rules, and you’ll survive; If not, good luck.
