2021 Spring Exhibition > Willa Butler

Throughout my life, I have dabbled in almost all aspects of art, from printmaking to graphic/website design. My favorite mediums to work with are digital photography, videography and in my free time I like to oil paint. The subject of my work is usually portraits. I experiment with colored lights and flashy make up to create an atmosphere that best depicts my model’s personality. In my late teens, I learned that I am truly passionate about making beautiful art. I dropped out of my dream school to pursue my art education and with that emotional process I am able to create meaningful art that I hope inspires others. To be able to turn a spare room into a studio and create a whole world within the camera's view is a thrill for me every time. I just want to make everything I work on beautiful and valuable to those who come across it. Through my practice with oil paint portraits, I have begun to see more beauty in every face I see, and with my brush I am able to really focus on unique features that create more of a challenge to match. Painting has allowed me to have a greater appreciation for highlights and shadows in my work. I am able to think of my photograph like a painting and play with the colors that tend to be pushed toward black or white with regular portraits.
