2021 Spring Exhibition > Gianna Durante

A practical and sensational work of pottery is always waiting patiently to be used. From the minute the clay is wedged, it sits on a wooden plank anticipating the form it will soon become. Sometimes, I do not yet know what kind of transformation the muddy ball will undergo until it hits the wheelhead; but with function and pleasure in my mind’s eye, I instinctively invent a handy and congenial piece of pottery that will soon bring pleasure to it’s future user.

As an early career theater artist, the most important elements of my technical and design work are based on efficiency, organization, and stimulating my audience. These characteristics are very applicable in my pottery because they guide my work to be the most spectacular and useful kitchenware to be used for everyday tasks.

My ceramics combine wheel thrown and hand constructed elements of which I am inspired by the objects I desire to use in my day to day life. Using primarily stoneware clay glazed and fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln, my one of a kind drinkware comes to life in a variety of earthy and bold tones of colors.

My love for functionality combined with my desire to make unrestrained, original works of art, invigorates me and the viewers of my pieces, compelling us to engage with the art, and attracts us to its comforting grip.
