Lighting helps tell a story in a photograph, so experimenting with light is essential to my work. My food photography makes use of natural lighting that glistens across a glass to create the perfect shadow and shimmer on a cool refreshing cocktail, while my portraits can use the deeply colored and artificial hues of pinks and blues to draw a face out of the darkness and create depth. I establish a plan of execution with all of my work until I am left with a final product I am proud of that evokes emotion and displays my creativity.
I primarily photograph portraits and food. While my work explores a variety of topics, my approach remains the same. Achieving the best lighting, composition, and attention to detail are all shared qualities between the two. The content of my food creations, the form in my styling, the vibrant or muted lighting, shapes of foods and props, and linear awareness are all key elements I focus on when photographing. These elements are essential when using the camera as a means of capturing my most enticing photos. They excite the senses and help pull the viewer in deeper to hopefully elicit a mouthwatering reaction to the food or a moment of infatuation in my portraits. A visually appealing dish can be just as seductive as the human form if executed properly. I want to draw the viewer into my work through textures of ingredients and costumes, evocative lighting, and form to create an appealing and sensational final product.
